Happy Independence Day

"Today we show our national pride
through a profile picture

Sixty-six years ago,
people were a little different"

The poem printed on front page of today's The Hindu is a beautiful reflection of how we have evolved as Indians in past sixty six years. Our mode of expression have changed drastically. Electronic media has become the most preffered way to remain connected. What remains the same is the feeling of "INDIANESS". "We, The people of India" still feel the ability of bringing the change together.

I would like to refer to The Hindu's poem again. "Can we stop rallying from behind And step in front?" This is a very powerful line. We all know and feel the potential inside us to revolutionize. However, we have suppressed this potential for quite sometime now, longer than required. In his address to nation on the eve of Independence day, President Pranav Mukherjee reiterateded that Democracy is a shared process. So if we feel that our democratic machine has not succeeded completely, then we are also responsible for its failure in some or the other way. Consider the progress of our country as our responsibility and not only that of our Government.  We have powerful tools in our hands-our rights. Use them judiciously and ofcourse wisely.

Another point which is worth mentioning here is that every right comes with a responsibility. In words of Gandhiji, "The source of right is duty. If we all discharge our duties, rights will not be far to seek." Hence while we are exercising our rights like Right to Information, Freedom of expression or Right to protest in the wake of transforming our society, it is our duty to take care so as not to infringe someone else's rights or freedom. It is good to protest against malpractice or other evils of our society. However it should not endanger democratic polity. Our fight against sins should not become riots which kill both sinners and innocents.

This blog is my views about my country and how can we improve our society. Comments and suggestions are welcome from the readers. Let us churn our brains to bring out the best of ourselves. Keep looking for my next blog on what I think is the first step of reform.
